Choosing the Right Fencing for Your Home: A West Midlands Guide

Fencing is the most overlooked part of most gardens. It defines the boundary, sets the visual tone and — if you get it wrong — sticks out like a sore thumb. Here's what we recommend based on real West Midlands jobs.

Closeboard / featheredge

The traditional UK garden fence. Vertical featheredge boards on horizontal rails, with concrete posts and gravel boards at the base. Lasts 15 – 20 years, looks tidy, and is the standard for most semis and detached homes. Best for traditional gardens.

Slatted contemporary panels

Horizontal slats with small gaps between them — modern, architectural and increasingly popular for new-builds. They let some light through, so the garden doesn't feel boxed in, and they pair brilliantly with composite decking and porcelain patios.

Composite fencing

Same material family as composite decking — wood-fibre and plastic — but in fence form. Costs more upfront (roughly double timber) but lasts 25+ years with zero maintenance. No painting, no rot, no warping. Worth considering if you want fit-and-forget.

Commercial and security fencing

For business premises, we install steel palisade, weldmesh, anti-climb and security-rated panel fencing. We also fit security posts and bollards to protect car parks and yards. See our full service list.

Which posts should you use?

Concrete posts last twice as long as timber and don't rot at the base. They're slightly more expensive but worth every penny. We use them on every job unless the customer specifically requests timber.

What does fencing cost?

Rough 2026 prices for fully installed fencing in the West Midlands:

  • Closeboard 6ft, concrete posts: £55 – £75 per metre
  • Slatted contemporary panels: £90 – £130 per metre
  • Composite fencing: £130 – £180 per metre
  • Commercial palisade: from £95 per metre
