Garden landscaping costs vary enormously — anywhere from £3,000 for a tidy-up to £40,000+ for a full multi-level transformation. Here's how the numbers actually break down for West Midlands homeowners in 2026, based on the quotes we've issued and the projects we've completed.
The three landscaping budget tiers
Most garden projects fit into one of three tiers:
- Tier 1 — Refresh (£3,000 – £8,000). New patio (or refurbished existing), turf or artificial grass, new fencing, light planting. One area of the garden transformed.
- Tier 2 — Full transformation (£8,000 – £20,000). New patio + decking, new lawn, retaining walls or raised beds, full fence replacement, planting beds, sometimes a pergola. The whole garden re-done.
- Tier 3 — Premium transformation (£20,000 – £40,000+). Multi-level patios in porcelain, water features, outdoor kitchen with pergola, integrated lighting, full planting scheme, custom features. The garden becomes a "second living room".
What drives the cost
The biggest cost drivers in a landscaping project are, in order:
- Hard landscaping square metres. Patios, paths and retaining walls eat budget faster than anything else. Porcelain runs £120 – £160/m², Indian stone £90 – £130/m², block paving £80 – £120/m².
- Level changes. Sloping gardens often need retaining walls — each one adds £400 – £1,500 depending on length and height. Steps, raised patios and multi-level decks all add cost.
- Drainage and excavation. Heavy clay subsoil (common across the West Midlands) needs more sub-base preparation. Hidden drainage issues uncovered during excavation can add £500 – £2,000.
- Features. Water features, outdoor kitchens (£8,000 – £18,000 in their own right), pergolas (£2,500 – £9,500), integrated lighting (£400 – £1,500), and irrigation each have their own price tags.
Realistic budgets by garden size
- Small back garden (under 50m²): £8,000 – £15,000 for a Tier-2 full transformation.
- Average back garden (50 – 100m²): £12,000 – £25,000 for a Tier-2 full transformation.
- Large back garden (100m²+): £18,000 – £40,000+ for a full transformation, depending on materials and features.
Front gardens are simpler — most are just driveway plus low-maintenance edges. Budget £3,000 – £6,000 for a typical front-garden tidy-up.
What "fully installed" should include
A proper landscaping quote covers all of:
- Site clearance, including removal of old patio, fencing, decking and waste
- Excavation to the right depth for each area
- Sub-base preparation for hard landscaping
- Edge restraints and retaining walls where needed
- All materials (paving, decking, fencing, turf, planting)
- Drainage and irrigation where specified
- Final clean and walk-through
- Workmanship guarantee (12 months) and aftercare guidance
How long does landscaping take?
For a typical Tier-2 full transformation, expect 3 to 8 weeks on site. Tier-1 refreshes finish in 1 to 2 weeks. Tier-3 premium projects sometimes run 8 to 12 weeks depending on the scope and how many trades need sequencing.
Where to spend, where to save
- Spend on the patio. It's the most-used surface in the garden. Cheap paving is the most-regretted choice in the projects we revisit later.
- Spend on fencing posts. Concrete every time. Timber posts rot in 8 – 10 years; concrete posts last for the lifetime of the fence.
- Save on plants. Mature trees and shrubs are expensive. Buying smaller plants and waiting 2 – 3 years saves thousands and the garden looks great either way once it settles.
- Save on outdoor lighting. Solar-powered path lights look fine on most jobs and avoid the cost of running cabling.
