Resin vs Block Paving: Which Driveway Is Right for Your Home?

Choosing between resin and block paving is one of the most common questions we get at Creative Contractors. Both are excellent, long-lasting surfaces — but they suit different homes, budgets and lifestyles. Here's a breakdown based on the hundreds of West Midlands driveways we've installed.

What is a resin driveway?

A resin driveway is made by mixing natural aggregate (small decorative stones) with a clear UV-stable resin, then trowelling it across a prepared base. The result is a smooth, seamless, slightly textured surface that comes in a wide range of stone colours. Most modern resin systems are permeable, which means rainwater drains straight through them — no planning permission needed under SUDS regulations.

What is a block paved driveway?

Block paving uses individual concrete or clay blocks laid in a pattern — herringbone, stretcher bond or basket weave — and bedded into a screeded sand base. Joints are filled with kiln-dried sand and the edges restrained with haunching. Block paving has been the UK driveway standard for 40 years for good reason: it's durable, repairable and looks great.

Cost comparison

In the West Midlands in 2026, expect to pay roughly:

  • Resin driveway: £70 – £95 per square metre, fully installed.
  • Block paving: £80 – £120 per square metre, fully installed, depending on block type.

Block paving is typically a little more expensive because of the labour involved in laying every block by hand. Resin is faster to install but the base preparation has to be perfect — any movement underneath shows on the surface.

Durability and lifespan

Both surfaces will last 20+ years if installed correctly. Block paving has the edge if a section gets damaged — you can lift and replace individual blocks. Resin is harder to patch invisibly if it gets damaged, but it's also less likely to shift, sink or weed in the first place.

Maintenance

Resin wins on day-to-day maintenance. A jet wash twice a year is enough to keep it looking new. Block paving needs occasional re-sanding of the joints and weed control if you don't have polymeric sand.

Which should you choose?

We recommend resin for:

  • Modern properties with clean architectural lines
  • Homeowners who want a low-maintenance finish
  • Driveways with awkward shapes or curves (resin moulds to any shape)

We recommend block paving for:

  • Traditional period homes
  • Heavy commercial use where individual blocks may need replacing
  • Customers who want patterns, borders and contrasting block colours
