An outdoor kitchen is a full build: masonry or steel-framed base, weatherproof cabinetry, built-in BBQ or pizza oven, prep counters, storage, plumbed sink where you want one, outdoor electrics, lighting, and a pergola or awning over the top so you can cook in light rain. The single biggest mistake we see is leaving the kitchen uncovered — the British weather means the cabinets and appliances last half as long and barely get used from November to March. Our standard build pairs the kitchen with a slatted aluminium pergola, which keeps everything dry without darkening the patio. We build the base in render-finished concrete or stone-clad masonry to match your house, drop in a top-end built-in BBQ (we typically recommend Napoleon, Weber or Big Green Egg), and finish with granite or porcelain worktops. Lighting, sockets and any plumbing are run before the cladding goes on. Plan for an outdoor kitchen the same way you'd plan an indoor one — the prep counter, storage and BBQ all need to be the right size and in the right relationship to each other.

Do you need planning permission for an outdoor kitchen?+
Most outdoor kitchens fall under permitted development as garden structures. Larger builds, or those very close to boundaries or facing the highway, sometimes need approval. We'll flag it at the design stage.

A 2m run of cabinets against a back wall — built-in BBQ, 1m of prep counter, storage underneath — is enough to make a small patio a proper entertaining space without taking up floor area.
