Patios & Decking

Patios and decking are the heart of most West Midlands gardens — it's where you actually live during summer. We install everything from a 10m² porcelain patio outside the back door to full multi-level decks running across the garden.

About our patios & decking service

Patio materials have changed massively in the last few years. Where we used to lay almost everything in Indian sandstone, modern porcelain has taken over for most modern homes — frost-proof, stain-resistant, doesn't need re-sealing, and large-format tiles (600×900mm and 800×800mm) make small gardens feel bigger. Indian stone, limestone and natural sandstone still suit traditional and period properties beautifully. For decking, composite has largely replaced softwood — no painting, no rot, no warping, 25+ year warranties. We build raised decks, tiered patios, steps and level changes, and hot tub bases (where the substrate needs to take serious load). Every patio gets a properly compacted sub-base, mortar-bedded slabs (not loose laid), pointed joints, and falls to drainage so you don't get standing water. Helen's tiered patio in Halesowen (22 photos in the gallery) is one of our most-shared examples.

Patios & Decking — Frequently Asked Questions

Porcelain or natural stone — which is better?+

Porcelain wins on maintenance — no sealing, frost-proof, stain-resistant — and large-format tiles make small spaces feel bigger. Natural stone wins on character, especially around period properties. We'll recommend based on the house and how you'll use the space.

Composite or timber decking?+

Composite costs more upfront (roughly 1.5× timber) but lasts 25+ years with zero maintenance — no painting, no rot, no warping. Timber is cheaper to install but needs treating every couple of years. We mostly install composite now.

Can you build a hot tub base?+

Yes — hot tubs need a properly engineered concrete or paving slab base because they're heavy when full of water. We design the substrate to take the load and integrate it into the patio or decking around it.
